Active control of sound radiation from plates with arbitrary boundary conditions is studied in this paper. An optimization procedure for the locations of piezoelectric actuators is developed. The objective function in the optimization is chosen as the sound power radiated from the plates. The influence of the changes in the support conditions on the eigenproperties of the plate is evaluated. The numerical results show that the control performance with respect to a boundary condition change is dependent upon the excitation frequency for the case where actuators are optimized for a certain boundary condition. However for the case of simply supported boundary condition, it is observed that a change in the translational stiffness will result in degraded control performance only when the translational stiffness is significantly less than infinite (i.e., simply supported).
