House Budget and Behavioral Sciences

The House Budget Bill calls for the essential elimination of the Behavioral
and Social Sciences Funding Programs at the National Science
Foundation. The plan is much more drastic than the one initiated in the
early 1980s by the Regan Administration, which almost killed funding for
behavioral sciences. This bill could be the start of the elimination of ALL
Federal funding for behavioral sciences. A major motivation for these
cuts appears to be ideological in that some Republicans have gone on
record as saying that behavioral science funding was only started
because it was the politically correct thing to do. Although, the House
Bill appears well on its way to passage, it is not too late to let your
Congress representatives, especially the Senate, now of your thoughts.
