EPSRC RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP: SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
PROCESSING.

COLLEGE LONDON

Applications are invited for an EPSRC quota award
research studentship leading to a Ph. D. to commence in
October 1998. The award can be held full-time over 3
years or part-time over a five year period.

The research will be in speech and/or language processing
Potential areas of research include:
- the enhancement of acoustic cues for improved speech
perception in noise.
- the application of speech enhancement to hearing or
language impairment or to second language learning
- the modelling of prosodic phenomena for high quality
speech synthesis.
- similarities and differences between human and
machine speech recognition

The Department holds three EPSRC Speech and Language
Programme projects for:
- A model of computational phonology for speech
synthesis to integrate and extend metrical approaches to
phonetic interpretation
- Language modelling for speech recognition using
lexical, syntactic and semantic knowledge
- Speech enhancement to improve intelligibility in
competing noise by the automatic location and enhancement
of perceptual features

Other related research in the department is in
psychoacoustics, speech perception, and speech processing
for hearing prostheses.

Further information is available from Dr Andrew Faulkner
at the address below, to whom applications should also be
sent. Interested candidates may also wish to consult our
WWW site: http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/ and the EPSRC
