Re: (why is high high)

When I studied Western classical singing I was taught to produce
high notes by directing the sound up into my forehead and by making
the forehead vibrate, i.e. producing the "head voice." Thus the
association of height with pitch seems to be related, for trained
Western singers, to the sound production process more than to
the perceptual process. Do any readers of this list know
whether we intuitively direct sound upwards in any way when
producing higher fundamental frequencies in speech? I am not sure
what the exact physiological correlates are of "voice placement"
as taught by singing teachers.
