Sonic Interaction Design Training School on Biomedical Data Sonification
COST IC0601 SID Training School
organised by Thomas Hermann

Bielefeld University, Germany

==========================================

The EU COST Action IC0601 (Sonic Interaction Design, SID) first Training School is focused on the promotion of interdisciplinary education and research in the fields of Sonification, Datamining, Sound Computing and Sonic Interaction Design. The School is aimed at graduate students working on their Master or PhD thesis, but it is open to any person carrying out research in these fields. It will be held in Bielefeld University, Germany from February 20-22, 2008.

It will be a short 3-days training program with both lectures and the opportunity for practical experiences of biomedical data using prepared sonification modules in SuperCollider. Topics covered will span from Data Mining techniques for multivariate time series, to an introduction to sonification techniques, to biomedical sonification applications. There will be a practical course on SuperCollider and how to use SuperCollider for sonification. One session will be open for all participants to give a short presentation of their own research.

The focus for this training school is Sonification and in particular biomedical applications of auditory displays; this includes basics on sound synthesis, programming languages and protocols, sonification techniques, and applications at the interface to biosignals ranging from scientific applications to artistic applications. One important application focus is EEG sonification.

There are a strictly limited number of places (25 max) and to apply for a place, students are asked to send a brief CV (list of publication optional), a description of your research focus, your preferred modules, and a short statement on your motivation for taking part in the training school. Applications should be sent to Thomas Hermann (thermann-at-sonification.de). There is no registration fee for the Training School and for students coming from outside the Bielefeld region a fixed grant of 500 EUR is available.
