question about the "Mosquito"

Hi all - As I've done for several years, last week I played the Mosquito ring tone (from this NPR story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5434687) during class to demonstrate how high-frequency hearing is lost earlier than students typically think. A student who couldn't hear the tone noted that his ears felt funny when it was playing - sort of a warm feeling. I've experienced a similar sensation when playing this tone but had assumed I was imagining it since I controlled the onset of the tone.

Anyway, the student was asking why this sensation would have occurred, and I didn't have a good answer. Do any of you?
