Ref 443/12 Research Lectureship/Senior Research Lectureship in Cognitive Science and Music, MARCS Institute

MARCS Institute: Researching Brain, Behaviour and Computation

MARCS Institute is a vibrant interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Western Sydney. Research at MARCS is conducted in five interdisciplinary research programs: Speech & Language, Music Cognition & Action, Bioelectronics & Neuroscience, Multisensory Processing, and Human Machine Interaction. MARCS is located on the Bankstown, Campbelltown, Kingswood and Parramatta campuses.

The Music Cognition and Action research program would be complemented and strengthened by a researcher who will investigate: perception and production of auditory rhythm and timing in individual and group settings involving music and movement; synchronisation and entrainment; interpersonal coordination in music, dance, and other joint activities, with special focus on the cognitive and motor processes and underlying neural mechanisms that support behaviour related to rhythm, timing, and sensorimotor synchronization. More generally, the researcher will incorporate studies of rhythm and timing into the study of temporal cognition at large (a fundamental evolutionary ability, necessarily preceding cultural expressions such as music and dance).

The successful applicant is expected to be developing a strong international standing and research reputation, and to demonstrate research excellence in the area of auditory perceptual or cognitive psychology, and/or cognitive neuroscience, with an excellent publication record and the potential to win competitive research income.

The University will appoint at Academic Level B or Level C depending upon the skills, qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.

Remuneration Package : Academic Level B/C
