This project will be performed within TWO!EARS, an FP7 STREP project funded within the Future Emerging Technology program of the EU.

The hosting department
The Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) group is part of the School of Innovation Sciences within the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).  The HTI group combines expertise in social sciences â in particular psychology â and engineering, studying technology in the service of human wellbeing, within the broader context of a socially and ecologically sustainable society. The psychoacoustic research in this department builds on the long tradition of the former Institute for Perception Research, IPO, and has a close cooperation with the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven as well as with other acoustic groups in the various departments of the TU/e. IPO has been strongly involved in the psychoacoustic modeling tradition that had its origin at the University of GÃttingen, and the HTI group cooperates closely with the universities in Oldenburg and Lyngby.

Description of the project
The Postdoctoral researcher will be employed in the context of the TWO!EARS project, a newly funded âSmall or medium-scale focused research projectâ within the Future and Emerging Technologies funding scheme of the EU FP7 program. TWO!EARS attempts to replace current thinking about auditory modeling by a systemic approach in which human listeners are regarded as multi-modal agents that develop their concept of the world by exploratory interaction. The goal of the project is to develop an intelligent, active computational model of auditory perception and experience in a multi-modal context. This novel approach is based on a structural link from binaural perception to judgment and action, realized by interleaved signal-driven (bottom-up) and hypothesis-driven (top-down) processing within an innovative expert system architecture. The major focus of the TU/e in this project is on binaural modeling and its interaction with monaural features. Here, the specific focus of TU/e will be on the extension of subcortical auditory processing models towards the handling of efferent information from top-down components. This aspect includes enabling the models to handle dynamic changes from the lower levels created by head movements as well as the adaptation of certain processing stages based on top-down information. In addition, the TU/e has responsibilities for the work package Dissemination, Collaboration and Exploitation.

The fellow will work with Prof. Armin Kohlrausch from the HTI group.

Tasks
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research in close cooperation with the project partners (for modeling mainly DTU, Lyngby) and publish the results via conference contributions and papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, in close cooperation with the project coordinator (TU Berlin), an active role in the project work package Dissemination, Collaboration and Exploitation is expected. The position offers the possibility to contribute to the teaching curriculum of the HTI group, including supervision of student projects on the BSc and MSc level.

Requirements

The applicant should hold a recently finished PhD in the area of human hearing sciences and must have published his/her research in international journals. Experience with behavioral research and familiarity with psychoacoustic modeling is required. Own research work with time-domain based modeling is highly appreciated. Fluency in English is required.

Conditions of employment
We offer:
â       a challenging postdoctoral appointment for a period of 2,5 years in a dynamic and ambitious university;
â       a gross monthly salary between â 2,919 and â 3,831 (on a full-time basis), depending on experience and knowledge;
â       a yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary;
â       a yearly end-of-year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
