Our vision is to lead the world in innovative bionic health solutions through research, development, and translation. We are at an exciting phase, designing, implementing, and evaluating devices that assist in diagnosis and treatment of sensory deficits and neurological disorders. Based on our original work with the highly successful cochlear implant, we are now developing an advanced bionic eye, deep brain stimulation systems for movement disorders, an epilepsy monitoring implant, unique brain imaging systems, and a range of other medical devices. Our goal is to deliver benefits to people living with challenging health disorders by translating and commercialising our research outputs. Current objectives of the Translational Hearing Research Group The translational hearing research group, led by Professor Colette McKay and including neuroscientists, clinicians, and engineers, has ongoing projects to translate innovative basic science into improved clinical outcomes for patients with cochlear implants and other hearing instruments. Our group applies neuroimaging (fNIRS and EEG), psychophysics, and speech understanding methods with adults and children with hearing loss. We translate the knowledge gained into diagnostic and clinical management innovations, or improved function of hearing instruments, to improve the quality of life of these hearing impaired individuals. The new position offers an opportunity for a person with strong leadership potential to join our team. The successful applicant should bring high-level expertise to the group relevant to the neuroscience of hearing, and must have broad multidisciplinary understanding in the area of hearing research and its clinical applications. This is an exciting career development opportunity for an outstanding researcher, with potential for an ongoing leadership role within the Institute. Position summary The successful applicant will be part of the Translational Hearing Research Group, reporting to Professor McKay, and will work closely with engineers, clinicians, and scientists in the team and across the Institute. She/he will provide strong input into existing projects of the team and will develop and seek funding for new projects that are consistent with the strategic goals of the Institute. Key Responsibilities • Provide leadership in a relevant area of expertise, for example, neuroimaging, signal processing of neuroimaging data, cortical processing of speech signals, psychophysics, language development• Obtain funding for research that is consistent with the strategic goals of the Bionics Institute from a range of sources such as government, philanthropic, and commercial entities • Prepare progress reports, scientific manuscripts for publication, and seminars on the research and translational activities • Supervise students and research staff in appropriate translational hearing projects • Support existing collaborations and develop new linkages with industry and clinical partners Required skills and qualifications Essential • PhD qualifications in a relevant area• A minimum 5 years post-doctoral experience with an outstanding track record including high-level publications and grant funding success. • Proven expertise in a relevant area of neuroscience of hearing. • Demonstrated leadership experience and potential • Experience working with industry and clinical partners • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact directly with clinicians and recipients of hearing devices as well as other members of the research team and external collaborators • Excellent written and verbal communication skills Desirable • Experience working with human participants in a clinical setting• Experience with software development in a research environment • Experience with analysis and processing of neurophysiological signals Requirements A police check is required Applications can be emailed to Prof Colette McKay, cmckay@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
