[AUDITORY] PhD position in (Hearing-Impaired) Auditory Signal Processing at Ghent University (BE)

Dear List,

We invite applications for a 4-year PhD position at the Hearing Technology Lab, Dept of Information Technology, Ghent University. Evaluation of the applications starts June 15th and continues until the position is filled (starting date Oct 2018 or earlier if preferred).

The PhD position is part of the ERC project RobSpear: “Robust Speech Encoding in Impaired Hearing” that takes an interdisciplinary approach (combining auditory models with EEG, psychoacoustics and machine-learning) to study sound processing in listeners with impaired hearing. You will be part of an international team of researchers with different backgrounds to develop signal-processing strategies for hearing aids of the future. Aside from signal-processing, behavioral sound perception and/or EEG experiments with normal and hearing-impaired listeners is expected as part of this project. The Hearing Technology lab of Prof. Verhulst offers an international research environment and access to world-class research facilities (waves.intec.ugent.be/hearing-technology and gasp.ugent.be). Funding is available for 4 years provided positive intermediate evaluations.

Applicants should hold an academic university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Engineering (Electrical, Acoustical, Biomedical), (Engineering) Physics, Mathematics, Informatics. Coding skills (Python, Matlab) and digital signal processing knowledge are required, experience with auditory modeling, sound applications, machine learning are a big plus. Excellent written and oral English skills are required and knowledge of the Dutch language a plus. Experience with writing scientific papers is a plus.

Applications including a CV, motivation letter, copies of higher-education degrees, grade transcripts and the name and contact details of two persons who are willing to give a reference should be sent electronically to: isabelle.vanderelstraeten@xxxxxxxx. Please mention “PhD vacancy hearing” in the subject line. Inquiries about the position can be directed to Prof. Verhulst (s.verhulst@xxxxxxxx).
