The Music Department at Durham University (UK) is pleased to announce the launch of a new specialism in Music and Science within our Taught Masters (MA) programme, commencing in the 2021-2022 academic year. MA students specialising in Music and Science will be educated on cutting-edge theories within music and science research and will be rigorously trained in methodologies (qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods) with an emphasis on transparent, reproducible research. Academic staff in our department have particular expertise on the topics of music and emotion, music and memory, the psychology and physiology of music performance, rhythm and synchronisation, corpus studies, and cross-cultural music perception and cognition. Music and Science students will also complete a dissertation (reporting results of a substantial empirical project) under close supervision from a relevant member of academic staff, as well as taking part in some shared modules with MA students pursuing other specialisations.
