The department of Ear, Nose and Throat surgery is looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate with machine learning experience. Within this study you will focus on people with a cochlear implant. Are you the candidate we are looking for?

You will develop methods for signal processing to tackle the problems that cochlear implant (CI, electrical inner ear prosthesis) users face in their daily lives. Even though CIs are extremely helpful tools for people with severe-to-profound hearing loss, their help is drastically limited in noisy environments, such as workplaces and classrooms. To address this limitation, you will develop advanced and personalized machine learning solutions for fundamental problems such as sound source localization and noise reduction in ecologically valid settings. This project is a close collaboration between the Radboud University and LUMC. It will be supervised by Prof. van Gerven (RU), Dr. Güçlütürk (RU), Prof. Frijns (LUMC) and Dr. Briaire (LUMC). You will be employed by the Centre for Audiology and Hearing Implants at the LUMC, but you will also be affiliated with and spend most of your time at the Artificial Intelligence department of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in Nijmegen. As part of the NWO Crossover INTENSE consortium, you will have the opportunity to collaborate and interact with renowned experts and industry representatives from all branches of neurotechnology. You will also benefit from the extensive training program of the Donders Graduate School and the special career development programs of the INTENSE consortium. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to supervise MSc and BSc students in their (honours) thesis projects and gain teaching experience in related topics.
