[AUDITORY] Seeking native Dutch musicians and non-musicians for an online auditory experiment

Dear Auditory List,

We at Deniz Başkent’s Speech Perception Lab at the UMCG in Groningen, NL (https://www.dbaskent.org/) are currently conducting some speech-on-speech perception research. We thought to reach out through this list, as there are perhaps some native Dutch speakers receiving this list who are outside our local network of participants.

We are using an online version of the Coordinate Response Measure (CRM). This measure requires participants to identify target words (colour, number) from a target sentence, spoken in the presence of a gibberish speech masker. Here is an example of a target sentence:

‘Laat de hond zien waar de rode (colour) twee (number) is’ (Show the dog where the red two is)

Specifically, we are looking at whether there is a difference in performance between musicians and non-musicians on this task, both with vocoded and non-vocoded speech streams. At the moment, we are recruiting native Dutch musicians and non-musicians, both adults over the age of 18 and older adults over the age of 60, so that we can measure whether any differences in performance extend to older age. The experiment can be conducted in the comfort of your own home and takes approximately 45minutes to complete, with scheduled short breaks throughout. You will receive an invitation email with further information and an encrypted link to the experiment, should you be interested in participating. Participants will be reimbursed for their time (€8) via bank transfer to a Dutch bank (if your bank is outside NL, let us know ahead of time!)

The criteria for both musicians and non-musicians are as follows:

Musicians – Began music lessons before the age of 7, received formal training for at least 10 years, and have been musically active within the last 4 years.

Non-Musicians – Do not fulfil any of the above criteria and have not been musically active within the last 7 years.

If you satisfy the criteria for either of the groups and would be interested in taking part, or have any questions, please contact one of our research team members via the contact information below. You will receive more detailed information about the task, as well as the link to the experiment. Equally, if you know of anyone who you think would like to take part, please feel free to forward this email. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Ryan Gray
