Dear List,
Does anyone know of research measuring how accurately listeners can guess if a man is a bass or tenor singer from just listening to their conversational speaking voice? (Or if a woman is an alto or soprano from just listening to their conversational speaking voice?).
Alternatively, does anyone know of studies empirically measuring the mean fundamental frequency of the conversational speaking voice of basses vs. tenors, or of sopranos vs. altos? (The singers can be amateurs, not professionals.) Thanks to Johan Sundberg
I am aware of a 1991 study based on reading a paragraph from the Rainbow Passage*, but I'm hoping to find more recent research, ideally with measurements based on conversational speech, as I think fundamental frequency patterns in read vs. conversational speech
have systematic differences (I welcome references on that topic, too).
