In response to the recent discussion concerning tone deafness, some of you may be interested in a new (1994) book, "*Onchi* and Singing Development" (G.Welch and T.Murao, editors), published by David Fulton Publishers (2 Barbon Close, London WC1N 3JX). The book presents nine chapters concerning recent research in poor pitch singing, pitch discrimination, pitch matching, children's singing development, evaluation, and so forth. Incidentally, the translation of the Japanese term *onchi* is "tone idiot". A bit politically abrasive perhaps but certainly to the point.
