More on good books The Yost book is quite good, as you've heard already, and goes way beyond Psychophysics. (Fundamentals of Hearing: An Introduction, Third Edition, William A. Yost, Academic Press, repeated here for completeness). Another more specifically "psychophysical" book on hearing is Brian C. J. Moore's book "An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing", also now in 3rd edition, from Academic Press (I think it's in paperback, though my 2nd edition is hardback). Another of my old favorites has also gone into third edition: Juan G. Roederer's "The Physics and Psychophysics of Music - An Introduction" from Springer-Verlag. And if you want to know more about how it works biologically, then James O. Pickles "An Introduction to the Physiology of Hearing" from Academic Press is a great source. I have 2nd edition, paperback. And don't overlook Dover's paperback series of cool old books, including Hermann Helmholtz "On the Sensations of Tone" (second edition, 1885, of the Ellis translation of Die Lehre von den Tenempfindungen). All of these are popular low-cost books, available through any library or bookstore, I'd bet. But if you want a really great old book that's a collection of carefully selected and edited reprints of benchmark papers, there's no substitute for "Phychological Acoustics" edited by Earl D. Schubert, 1979. Unfortunately, it's out of print. So maybe if everyone sends a plea to publisher Dowden, Hutchingson & Ross, Inc., they'll find a way to allow it to be republished in paperback. It's in the "Benchmark Papers in Acoustics" series, and says it's distributed worldwide by Adademic Press, Inc., a subsidiary of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers. Anyone have a channel to these publishers? \Dick Lyon (408)974-4245 Apple/ATG/InteractiveMedia/PerceptionSystems
