For a thoughtful discussion of "elevator" music, and other sorts of background music, see: Elevator music: a surreal history of Muzak, easy-listening, and other moodsong by Joseph Lanza. Published: New York : St. Martin's Press, 1994. This book may not provide you with many references to good research in the area (I don't think there is much of that), but it's fun to read and it contains a good history of different types of background music (including some by well-respected composers). I'm no fan of elevator music, but the book reinforced my belief that this area deserves more serious attention. ____________________________________ Gary R.
