I am pleased to announce that Defeating Deafness (a UK charity) has agreed to sponsor four studentships in connection with the 1999 Conference on Implantable Auditory Prostheses, which will be held in Asilomar, California from 29th August to 3rd September, 1999. The studentships will cover airfares (up to a maximum of 550 pounds sterling), ground transportation, and the costs of a shared room plus food for the duration of the conference. Those eligible to apply are Ph.D. students and recent post-doctoral students from the EU (preference being given to UK students and post-docs). Applications should be sent to me at the address below. They should include a brief CV, a statement of research interests, a statement of the potential benefits of attending the conference, and a supporting letter from the supervisor or current "boss". It is a condition of the studentships that a brief report be sent to Defeating Deafness after the conference. Best wishes, Brian C. J.
