Dear Tim, I think I am not the only one to disagree with your phenomenological observations. If you mean HRTF-processed sounds by "binaural recording", my own and many of our subjects' data clearly show frequently occurring front-to-back confusions. Although it is true that true frontal percepts appear to be rare birds with HRTF-processed sound presentations, frontal sources are almost never reported as intracranial while behind-the-head images are clearly extracranial.
