There was a nice discussion on the high - low mapping in this list five years ago. Go to http://www.auditory.org/postings/1997/ and search for "mapping". As I remember it the mapping is a recent one, and the old Greeks might have had it vice versa. (BTW: Dan, apparently there is no easy way to search the archives at present. I tried Google, Altavista, and Nothern Light, and could not find a way to search for these postings. If this is only due to my unskillfulness please tell me how to do it efficiently. Maybe others might benefit as well if you explain it to the list.)
