The inner hair cell transduction process as well as the synapse between the hair cells and the auditory nerve fibers are quite nonlinear. Therefore, even if the beat frequency is not present in the cochlear mechanical response, it will be present in the neural activity coming from the cochlea. -------------------------------------------------------------------- David C.
