Responding rather late to the everyday vs musical discussion, list members might be interested to look at Nicola Dibben's Musicae Scientiae paper 'What do we hear when we hear music?' - Mus Sci vol 5 161-194 which has theoretical discussion and empirical work about this issue; and also my book 'Ways of Listening: an ecological approach to the perception of musical meaning', which in takes up this question in various ways.
