I've never heard that it was used as a standard tool for 3D audio recordings: I've been using most of all B-Format mikes (Soundfield), and a couple of times an Holophonic mike... For high order ambisonic recordings, I've always been using custom made multicapsule microphones, and I'm not really aware of a commercial alternatives!
