Since its inception in 2000, ISMIR has rapidly =20 become the premier venue for the multidisciplinary field of =20 accessing, analyzing, and managing large collections and archives of =20 music information. The expansion of the music information retrieval =20 (MIR) community reflects the enormous challenges and opportunities =20 presented by the recent and tremendous growth in available music and =20 music-related data. ISMIR provides a forum for the exchange of ideas =20= between representatives of academia, industry, entertainment, and =20 education, including researchers, developers, educators, librarians, =20 students, and professional users, who contribute to this broadly =20 interdisciplinary domain. Alongside presentations of original =20 theoretical research and practical work, ISMIR provides introductory =20 and in-depth tutorials, and a venue for the showcase of current MIR-=20 related products and systems. To reflect the increased maturity of the event and of the field, this =20= year's conference introduces several significant changes over recent =20 ISMIR conferences: =95 Emphasis on interdisciplinarity: While ISMIR has always had been =20= inherently interdisciplinary in nature, ISMIR-08 will place a =20 singular premium on scholarly papers that span the two or more =20 disciplines . This preference will be applied to the balancing of =20 the overall program, and will influence the selection of papers for =20 the proceedings and the oral presentations. ISMIR-08 will be single =20 track, and all oral presentations will take place in plenary sessions. =95 Uniform paper status: There will be no 'tiering' of papers; all =20 accepted papers will be allotted up to six pages in the proceedings, =20 and all papers will have poster presentations -- the most effective =20 way to promote substantial discussions. In view of the increased =20 presence of poster presentations, more of the conference schedule =20 will be devoted to poster sessions. A subset of papers will be =20 selected for oral presentation in addition to their poster slots on =20 the basis of their breadth of interest to the community at large , =20 but without any implied judgment of their quality relative to the =20 other papers. =95 Late breaking / demo session: This session is designed to showcase =20= late breaking or preliminary results and technical demonstrations, =20 Submissions are in the form of abstracts, to be published on the =20 conference website. The session will be run in a poster format. =95 Limitations on papers per author: We introduce some authorship =20 limits to encourage all authors to focus on preparing their best work =20= for submission, and to cultivate a broad range of work by diverse =20 researchers. Any individual may submit only one paper as first =20 author, and his or her name may appear as an author or co-author on =20 only three submissions in total, including late breaking/demo =20 submissions. The topic areas and emphasis on high quality and exciting research in =20= all aspects of MIR remain unchanged. Novel and previously =20 unpublished submissions are solicited in areas including, but not =20 limited to, the following: =95 content-based querying and retrieval =95 database systems, indexing, and query =95 fingerprinting and digital rights management =95 compression and streaming =95 optical music recognition =95 score following and audio alignment =95 transcription and annotation =95 computational musicology =95 perception and cognition =95 harmony, chords and tonality =95 melody and motives =95 rhythm, beat, tempo and form =95 timbre, instrumentation and voice =95 modification and transformation of music data =95 emotion and aesthetics =95 performance analysis =95 applications of MIR to the performing arts and multimedia =95 automatic classification =95 genre, style and mood =95 similarity metrics =95 music summarization =95 user interfaces and user models =95 music recommendation and playlist generation =95 text and web mining =95 evaluation of MIR systems =95 knowledge representation, user tags and metadata =95 libraries, archives and digital collections =95 methodological and philosophical issues =95 social, legal, ethical and business issues In addition to research papers, we also solicit proposals for =20 tutorials, panels, and exhibits. More details on each category are =20 provided below. Contribution requirements and guidelines 1. Papers: All papers will be peer-reviewed according to their =20 novelty, technical content, presentation, and contribution to the =20 overall balance of topics and disciplines represented at ISMIR-08. =20 Papers that introduce new topics and methods to MIR research are =20 particularly welcome. Special efforts will be made to recruit =20 reviewers from a broad range of disciplines, to ensure that papers =20 from all areas are reviewed fairly and sympathetically. Where =20 possible, authors are strongly encouraged to present evaluations of =20 their work that use benchmark data. Paper submissions should satisfy =20 the following conditions: =95 Formatting must comply to the guidelines and templates available on =20= the submission web page (http://ismir2008.ismir.net/submission/). =95 Submitted papers must be between 4 and 6 pages long. =95 Papers should include a 150-200 word abstract. =95 Submission must consist of original contributions (not previously =20= published and not currently being considered for publication elsewhere). =95 Accepted papers will be designated either as poster only =20 presentations, or as plenary talk with poster presentation. During =20 submission, authors may indicate a preference, but the choice will be =20= made by the program committee. =95 Authors of accepted papers will be asked to provide camera-ready =20 copies of their papers. =95 If accepted, authors are encouraged to bring laptop computers or =20 other appropriate equipment to supplement their presentations. =95 For each accepted paper, at least one author must register for the =20= ISMIR 2008 conference prior to submission of the camera-ready version. 2. Late-breaking / demo submissions: A special session during the =20 ISMIR-08 schedule will be dedicated to: (i) the presentation of preliminary results and ideas which are not =20 yet fully formed nor systematically evaluated; and (ii) the demonstration of applications that are of interest to the =20 MIR community. These "late breaking / demo" submissions will not be reviewed and =20 will not have associated papers on the proceedings. They have been =20 assigned a late deadline. Submissions should be emailed to: ismir2008-=20= demos@xxxxxxxx as a pdf file containing the title, author(s) and =20 affiliation(s), and a 100-200 word abstract outlining the work to be =20 presented. Abstracts will be published online. Should there be more =20 submissions than allowed by the available presentation space, =20 presentations that contribute to a balanced session will be given =20 priority. Limitations on the number of papers per author apply. 3. Tutorials: The first day of the conference (Sunday, September 14) =20 will consist of a parallel session of introductory or in-depth =20 tutorials each concentrating on a single topic and lasting =20 approximately 3 hours, including a break. Submissions should be =20 emailed to ismir2008-tutorials@xxxxxxxx as pdf files containing a =20 1-2 page abstract including: =95 an outline of the tutorial content, =95 the intended and expected audience, =95 short biography of the presenter(s), and =95 any special requirements. 4. Panels: Panels should be lively, controversial, and thought-=20 provoking discussions on specific topics of interest to the ISMIR =20 community. Panel sessions should not consist of paper presentations, =20 but should be structured so as to engage the audience in thoughtful =20 and constructive dialog with the panelists. Submissions should be =20 emailed to ismir2008-panels@xxxxxxxx as pdf files containing a 1-2 =20 page abstract including: =95 the topic and issues to be discussed, if possible formulated as a =20= provocative question, =95 a short listing of pro and con arguments, =95 short biographies of the moderator and panelists, and =95 any special requirements. 5. Exhibits and Bookstore: Throughout ISMIR 2008, space will be =20 available for publishers, software companies, booksellers, service =20 providers, system vendors, and any other businesses interested in =20 exhibiting their MIR-related products. They are invited to contact =20 the program committee via email to ismir2008-exhibits@xxxxxxxx =20 regarding the ISMIR bookstore and/or exhibition space.
