Dear List, I am pleased to announce the publication of my new book, "Understanding Musical Understanding", an amalgamation of music psychology, philosophy, and sociology that provides a fresh view of the musical experience. It demonstrates that, rather than analyzing musical activities per se, explanations of musical learning and understanding are found in examining underlying cognitive activities: principles of musical pattern construction, language-like template tuning protocols, sensory awareness, musical quality assessment, and the effects of culture on the interpretation of music. Topics include: * The nature of musical understanding * Music as Time and Shape * Musical memory and pattern constructs * Parallels between music and language processing * Music and consciousness * Discriminating musical quality * Understanding music of a Foreign culture Published by: The Edwin Mellen Press, PO 450, Lewiston NY 14092-0450; tel (716) 754-2788; email: imiller@xxxxxxxx or visit www.mellenpress.com Cheers, Harold Fiske Faculty of Music University of Western Ontario London, Ontario CANADA
