Christian, Just to throw more confusion into the pot (for "pot", read "metaphor") - you need to be very careful these days about how you reproduce the waveforms being presented to your subjects. Especially under Windows: most sound cards do some sort of signal processing within their drivers. I'm not sure what the situation is if you're running Linux, but under Windows I'd strongly recommend disabling all such functions. I believe ASIO drivers (such as the ASIO4ALL freeware) can help with this, but it's also worth checking the Windows "control panel" settings if you're using anything Microsoft.
