Location: Toronto, Canada The selected candidate will work together with Frank Russo (Psychology, Ryerson University) and waveDNA to develop robust methods of quantifying melodic similarity, note-to-note salience, and related measures from MIDI music. The method will be refined through behavioral testing and codified so as to allow for implementation as an algorithm that will interface with core waveDNA technology. A parallel line of research will utilize electrophysiology to assess whether mathematical combinations of physiological signals (EEG, facial-EMG, Resp, HR, GSR) can be used to represent complex subjective emotions conveyed by music. The long-term goal of this latter project is to enable emotional search from a database of MIDI music. The initial contract will be for one year starting Fall 2009 and will be renewable assuming satisfactory performance. Applications will be considered as they are received, and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is flexible but our strong preference is a start date of no later than October 1st, 2009. Applicants should have a PhD in psychology/neuroscience, or a related discipline with research emphasis in music cognition or music information retrieval. Proficiency with programming is preferred but not essential. The position pays NSERC scale at CAN$ 40K per annum.
