The beetle story you wrote has a different version in "To Know a Fly" by Vincent Gaston Dethier a great book on how research is done. As an example of bad research the story involves training an flea to jump and then removing the legs. Once all the legs were gone the fly could no longer jump. So it was concluded that the insect heard with it legs. I like it because the although the experiment is full of problems, the conclusion may well be true as some insects have their hearing organs on the legs. Glenis Long
