Hi Vijay, The rationale for conventional sets of tones is that of comparability with the results of other experiments. My guess is that the set {200, 400, 800 ...} comes from the "speech and hearing" tradition (audiology, speech therapy, etc.), since these are the settings on audiometers. The other set {500, 100, 2000, ...} seems to come from the psychophysical tradition. So it really depends on whose research you want to compare your results with.
