Title: Neuro-cognitive modelling of auditory perception, learning, and speech understanding. Scope: Neurally-inspired modelling of the auditory brainstem and cortex based on recent neuroscientific results. Motivation: Many current applied models of auditory processing still start from the place theory model first defined by Jeffress in 1948. They tend to ignore more recent studies of the auditory system and the roles of learning and cortical reafference—what John Taylor might refer to as 'corollary discharge'—in sound perception, localisation, and speech understanding. The goal of this special session is to bring recent results to the attention of the attendees of the conference and to provide insight into developments in neural modelling of the auditory system. Appeal to attendees of the conference: This session would consider the current state of the art in applied auditory modelling and would provide an opportunity for practitioners and interested researchers to discuss future directions of development.
