Dear Patrick, I also had this effect with pa_wavplay & when using an ASIO driver. I always did some zero padding (100 ms worked fine for me) at the beginning and at the end of the sound to avoid truncation. I now use a commercial but very powerful tool called Soundmex Pro (http://www.soundmexpro.de/) for playback/recording. With this tool, even brief sounds are produced without problems on my system.
