I am happy to answer your questions. Please distribute widely. Thank you and best wishes, Bernhard Seeber *Senior Research Fellow in Translational Hearing Research (Cochlear=20 Implantation)* * * *School of Clinical Sciences in association with the NIHR National=20 Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing* ** *=A335,788 - =A344,016 per annum, depending on skills and experience. Salar= y=20 progression beyond this scale is subject to performance* The NIHR National Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing (NBRUH)is a=20 partnership between Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, the=20 University of Nottingham and the Medical Research Council Institute of=20 Hearing Research. It employs approximately 30 academic, technical and=20 administrative staff, all based in newly refurbished Trust premises in=20 the centre of Nottingham. The Unit has recently successfully renewed its=20 funding from the NIHR from April 2012 through to 31 March 2017. We are now looking for a Senior Research Fellow who will join a=20 multi-disciplinary research team whose role is to create new knowledge=20 through basic and translational research with the aim to increase the=20 benefit from cochlear implants (CIs). The candidate will work in close=20 association with the Auditory Perception and Signal Processing group at=20 the MRC Institute of Hearing Research in Nottingham. The project aim is=20 to learn how to optimally combine a CI with residual hearing for the=20 benefit of hearing-impaired individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD:=20 normal hearing in one ear and profound or complete loss in the other=20 ear). SSD is a common clinical complaint that also provides an ideal=20 model with which to study effective combination of electrical hearing=20 through a CI in one ear, and acoustic hearing in the other, normal=20 hearing ear. Specifically, the project will investigate the use of=20 monaural and binaural cues for analysing the auditory scene using a=20 variety of psychophysical experimental techniques already established in=20 the research team, e.g. our internationally-recognised spatial hearing=20 assessment facilities. The studies will provide crucial knowledge for=20 future improvements of CIs which will be gained and translated through=20 our close collaboration with hearing device manufacturers. New proposals=20 will be developed over the next 5 years and may include further work to=20 improve implant fitting and signal processing. The successful candidate=20 will be involved in all aspects of research including development,=20 design, implementation and dissemination of research findings. Suitably=20 experienced candidates will be expected to lead research proposals and=20 to be active in securing additional external funding. The successful candidate will independently lead research studies=20 related to cochlear implantation. They will define research objectives=20 in collaboration with senior colleagues, setting up and managing=20 resources in order to achieve research outputs. They will need to keep=20 abreast of the general literature and critically review the literature=20 relating to the research area and manage and perform appropriate=20 statistical analysis of research data using relevant software packages=20 and interpret findings. They will also be responsible for developing=20 research proposals and seeking and securing funding in collaboration=20 with colleagues within NBRUH and in other organisations nationally and=20 internationally. They will also be expected to prepare and deliver oral=20 presentations and posters reporting research results within NBRUH and=20 associated partner organisations, and to national and international=20 conferences and publish as first or co-author in peer-reviewed academic=20 journals. Candidates should have a BSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline and=20 a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline. In the absence=20 of a PhD, extensive relevant experience within their subject /=20 discipline will be considered. Training and skills in quantitative=20 research methods are essential as is a good working knowledge of=20 programming in Matlab, C/ C++, or a related language and of how to=20 implement statistical software to analyse and interpret data. Good data=20 management and database skills are also required. The successful candidate will have research experience in a relevant=20 field. They will also have experience in research leadership including=20 initiating, sustaining and pursuing a research plan, a consistent track=20 record of published research recognised by peers, experience of=20 contribution to grant proposals for collaborative research, and a track=20 record of successful grant capture. A recognised national reputation in=20 a relevant field is also a prerequisite. This full time post is available from 1 April 2012 and will be offered=20 on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2017. It is a condition of this post that satisfactory enhanced disclosure is=20 obtained from the Criminal Records Bureau. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Bernhard Seeber, Research Lead=20 for the Cochlear Implantation Research area, NBRUH, tel: +44 (0) 115 922=20 3431 or email: seeber@xxxxxxxx <mailto:seeber@xxxxxxxx>.=20 Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will=20 not be accepted.
