The Issue presents = methodological reflections of the three authors (Alan Marsden, Guerino = Mazzola, Geraint Wiggins) on achievements, failures, challenges, and = interdisciplinary perspectives of mathematical and computational = approaches to music research. Each of the three position papers written = by the authors is commented in response articles by the other authors in = order to capture competing points of view. Thus the Special Issue = presents controversial perspectives on the contribution of mathematical = and computational approaches to music research, hopefully stimulating a = broad debate on these issues within the growing community of = interdisciplinary music research. Examples of topics discussed: - The precision of mathematics and computation versus the imprecision of = humans - What kind of theory is music theory=97and what are the consequences = for mathematical and computational approaches to music? - The use of models and the issue of abstraction - Envisioned perspectives for interdisciplinarity =20 The table of content can be downloaded here: = http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17459737.2012.712354 The introduction providing a short overview on the different topics of = the discussion can be downloaded here: = http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17459737.2012.704154 Anja Volk=20 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Anja Volk VIDI-laureate, Project leader MUSIVA Assistant Professor Department of Information and Computing Sciences Utrecht University http://people.cs.uu.nl/volk/ --Apple-Mail-33--313728900 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset="windows-1252" <html><head></head><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; = -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; = ">Dear colleagues,</div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: = 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal = 12px/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; "><br></div><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; = ">the Special Issue <b>Mathematical and Computational Approaches to = Music: Three Methodological Reflections </b>of the Journal of = Mathematics and Music<b> </b>is now<b> open access</b> and available at = <a = href=3D"http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/tmam20/6/2">http://www.tandfonline.= com/toc/tmam20/6/2</a></div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: = 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal = 12px/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; "><br></div><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; = ">Journal of Mathematics and Music, Volume 6, Issue 2, 2012</div><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; = ">Special Issue: Mathematical and Computational Approaches to Music: = Three Methodological Reflections</div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal = normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; ">Guest Editors: Anja Volk and = Aline Honingh</div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; = margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal = 12px/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; "><br></div><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; = ">The Special Issue is dedicated to explicate and discuss methodological = issues in the interdisciplinary research field of mathematical and = computational approaches to music research.
