Application Deadline: 06 March 2012 This PhD project aims to confirm the translational value of a social cognitive predictor of effective everyday communication and hearing aid usage/satisfaction in younger and older populations with hearing difficulties. The research combines behavioural, audiological, and EEG experiments on language processing with neuropsychological assessment of individual social cognitive functioning in older and younger adults with and without hearing loss. The project will involve collaboration with Phonak, a Swiss world-leader in designing hearing devices with the aim of developing a diagnostic test based on the results of the experiments conducted on speech comprehension and social function. This 4-year studentship provides full support for tuition fees, all associated research costs and an annual tax-free stipend at minimum Research Council rates (£13, 590 in 2011). The project is due to commence October 2012 and is open to UK/EU nationals only due to the nature of the funding. The successful candidate will benefit from extensive training in acquiring behavioural, neuropsychological and EEG data, analysis and experimental design/testing. Previous PhD graduates from our group have progressed into prestigious postdoctoral positions involving development of new diagnostics, the NHS or pure-mechanisms-based research. Applicants should hold a minimum upper-second honours degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, speech/language therapy, audiology or the medical sciences. A Masters in a similar field and previous experience of neuroimaging, behavioural testing and/or programming would be an advantage.
