I am particularly hoping to be able to conduct some discussions at the upcoming Acoustical Society meeting in Montreal. =20 Thanks! =20 Erick =20 Postdoctoral Research Opportunity at NCRAR =20 NIH funding is currently available for a PhD-prepared scientist to join the laboratory of Frederick (Erick) Gallun at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR), located at the Portland VA Medical Center and associated with the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). =20 The project, entitled "Predicting the benefits of spatial and spectrotemporal cues", is focused on development and validation of clinical tests of the ability to understand speech in complex auditory environments. Participants vary in age from 18-89 and have either normal hearing or mild to moderate hearing loss. Methods include testing in the NCRAR anechoic chamber as well as using virtual spatial arrays presented over headphones. Spatial and spectrotemporal cue sensitivity is being tested using psychophysical measures with simple stimuli as well as speech-based tests. Currently, advanced statistical techniques are being developed for the analysis of localization performance. Future directions (not yet funded) are anticipated to include testing participants with severe hearing loss as well as examining the effects of hearing aids and hearing aid processing strategies. =20 Successful applicants will need to have previous experience in one or more of the following areas and an enthusiasm for gaining experience in all: psychoacoustic methods, binaural hearing, speech perception, effects of aging and hearing impairment on auditory function, Matlab programming, digital signal processing, statistical and computational modeling.=20 =20 The goal of the postdoctoral experience will be to provide an opportunity for mentored development of experimental ideas and to provide the basis for a future of independent research. Emphasis will be placed on allowing the postdoctoral researcher to develop new approaches to the questions associated with the grant, as well as providing ample opportunity to be mentored in the presentation and publication of clinical research.=20 =20 Opportunity exists for a guaranteed year of funding, followed by additional time dependent on progress and the ability of the applicant to secure additional postdoctoral funding through NIH F32 or similar mechanisms.=20 =20 The NCRAR is a Dept. of Veterans Affairs Center of Excellence, and the only such center dedicated to the discovery and delivery of cutting-edge solutions to auditory system impairments.
