The goals of the project are to evaluate the be= nefits of cochlear implants for single-sided deafness in complex multisourc= e acoustic environments, and to evaluate the possibility that profoundly de= af individuals with a cochlear implant might outperform normal-hearing list= eners in radio communication tasks in extreme noise environments. This position will be based in the Research Section of the National Milita= ry Audiology and Speech Pathology Center, Walter Reed National Military Med= ical Center, Bethesda, Maryland under the supervision of the Principal Inve= stigator (PI) for this project, Joshua Bernstein, Ph.D. Responsibilities include: 1) Help develop and run experimental and studies concerned with speech = intelligibility in noise and sound-source localization in complex multisour= ce environments. This will include: help with literature reviews, experimen= tal design, develop testing methodology programming for stimulus presentati= on and data collection, equipment set-up and calibration, pilot studies in = normal-hearing listeners, subject recruitment and testing, data analysis an= d dissemination of results. 2) Design and implement new scientific studies as needed, help with dat= a analysis, writing, and publication of the experimental and modeling data. 3) Maintain research records according to current HIPAA regulations. 4) Perform other duties as assigned. The most important qualities we are seeking in an individual are: 1) Technical skills (especially Matlab) to develop, troubleshoot an= d carry out auditory experiments. 2) Experience testing human subjects and analyzing psychophysical a= nd speech-reception data. Prior research experience with cochlear implants = and/or spatial hearing is preferred. 3) Demonstrated track record designing, carrying out and publishing= research in the field of hearing science. 4) Willingness to engage in the regulatory aspects of research Experience Required: Experience in Hearing Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Physics, Elec= trical Engineering or related field. Background knowledge in several of th= e following areas is preferred: Cochlear Implant research experience; Exper= imental design and methods; Psychophysics, especially concerning binaural h= earing, sound localization and speech intelligibility; Signal processing; C= ochlear implant clinical audiology Education Required: A Ph.D. in Hearing Science, Audiology, Computer Science, Physics, Electrica= l Engineering or related field is preferred, although an individual with an= Au.D. and substantial research experience involving cochlear implants will= also be considered. This position would be ideal for an individual who is = just completing their Ph.D. and desires postdoctoral experience in the area= of cochlear implants, but other qualified individuals are also encouraged = to apply. The Research Associate will join a dynamic group of researchers with a dive= rse research portfolio including topics related to Cochlear implants, Heari= ng Aids, Auditory Fitness for Duty, Hearing conservation, Psychoacoustics, = Speech Perception in Noise, Spatial Hearing, Multisensory perception, Motor= Speech and Voice Disorders, Swallowing, Tinnitus and Traumatic Brain Injur= y. The Research section is embedded within the Audiology and Speech Pathol= ogy Clinics, providing ample opportunities for collaboration between the re= search and clinical staff. Time frame: Funding has been awarded for this position for one (1) year, and is expecte= d to recur for up to two (2) additional years. Salary commensurate with ex= perience. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
