Session Type: Panel Discussion / Workshop Description: This workshop introduces the Tympan Open Source Audio Processi= ng Platform (www.tympan.org<http://www.tympan.org>), which wraps powerful a= udio hardware and software tools in a user-friendly app and novice programm= ing environment for real-time acoustic signal processing. The workshop wil= l feature live virtual tutorials, an open Q&A, and an invitation to partici= pate in a hackathon challenge. Participants to the hackathon will be invite= d to present their results at the Fall 2021 ASA meeting. Timeline: June 8, 2021: Tutorial and Hackathon announcement June 20, 2021: Hackathon participants submit<https://shop.tympan.org/pages/= asa-conference-2021> a 1-page proposal. June 24, 2021: Top 10 proposals receive a free Tympan Rev E. September 2021: Abstract submission to ASA Winter 2021 Special Session for = Hackathon December 2021: Accepted abstracts present at ASA Winter 2021 in Seattle, WA= (hopefully!) Background: In 2015, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorde= rs (NIDCD) released two funding opportunity announcements to support the de= velopment of hardware and software tools that could be readily reconfigured= by the research community to enable new basic psychophysical research stud= ies, encourage studies with novel acoustic processing algorithms, and facil= itate the translation of the results of these studies into applications for= hearing aids, cochlear implants, and consumer electronics devices. Several= research groups (including several small businesses and institutions) are = now funded through this opportunity to develop these tools using Open Sourc= e principles. In this special session, one of the funded research groups w= ill provide a tutorial on the Tympan platform and challenge the community t= o use it in their research to spur innovation in the field.
