The successful applicant will join an NSERC-funded project exploring acoustic complexity, with the dual goals of (a) enhancing our basic understanding of timbre, and (b) applying this knowledge to the redesign of auditory alarms in medical devices through collaboration with an international team to create more effective human-computer interfaces optimizing surgical outcomes. For a general overview of this work, please see Dr. Schutz=E2=80=99s recent TEDx talk at www.maplelab.net/ted. The first stem of this project (theoretical background) is described here in our 2020 Scientific Reports (Nature) article: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-63132-2, and the second (applied) here in our 2020 Applied Ergonomics article: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S000368702100079X Applicants will need a Bachelor=E2=80=99s degree in Psychology, Cognitive S= cience, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or another affiliated discipline. Experience with computer programming and statistical analyses will be viewed favourably but is not required. General information on the graduate program and links to application instructions can be found at www.maplelab.net/grad. Specific questions beyond those addressed on this page should be directed to Dr. Michael Schutz (schutz@xxxxxxxx). Please include a CV, unofficial transcript, brief writing sample, and indication of citizenship/residency status (i.e. Canadian or non-Canadian) with your inquiry. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Michael Schutz, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Music Cognition/Percussion, McMaster University Secretary, Society for Music Perception and Cognition Director, MAPLE (Music, Acoustics, Perception & LEarning) Lab: www.maplelab.net Core Member, McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind University Scholar (2019-2023) Contact Information: -- Office: 424 Togo Salmon Hall -- Lab: 422 Togo Salmon Hall -- Web: www.michaelschutz.net -- Email: schutz@xxxxxxxx -- Phone: 905.525.9140, ext 23159 (office); ext 27021 -- Mailing address: 1280 Main St. W.
