--0000000000002db11805fdc87a2f Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi all I don't think it should be made overly complicated. Presuming to judge someone's background, privilege or character based purely on the colour of their skin is unfair prejudice. It is simply fallacious to argue from the premise that because a large (shrinking) proportion of people in position X are of demographic Y, that any person in that position of that demographic is there unfairly. It is reductive, anti-human and it is prejudicial, the very reasons we now claim are invalid reasons for people to have been put into positions of power in the first place. That doesn't mean that there hasn't been or continues to be unfairness, but it can't be addressed by blindly thrashing with more yet unfairness at the individual level. The point is that no progress is made if the unfairness of the past is addressed by instituting yet more unfairness for future generations to have to sort out. That way madness lies. The real problem is the rigidity and lack of expansion in cultural spaces. Everybody is competing for the same number of cultural "slots" as they were competing for hundreds of years ago with populations a fraction of their previous size. The only way to begin to fix these sorts of injustices systemically is to recognize individuality, and to understand that that produces diverse outcomes. We need to afford individuals with sufficient cultural space. To give a silly comparison Bach was running multiple professional choirs and orchestras in Leipzig, writing a new Cantata every week, when the city had a population of maybe 20000 souls. Shakespeare's England had a similar population to modern Moldova. We cannot progress with this issue until it is recognized that we are squabbling over who gets to eat the last crumbs of a dwindling pie while enforcing norms that ensure that no-one else get to bake new pies. Preprint servers are not the solution to this problem. But it's a start.
