The successful candidate will contribute to NIH-funded research investigati= ng neural encoding and processing of electrical stimulation in the cochlear= nerve, with a particular emphasis on integrating human cochlear implant ex= periments with computational modeling. This position is designed to provide interdisciplinary training that brings= together complementary expertise in human cochlear implant research and co= mputational auditory neuroscience. During the initial phase of training, th= e fellow will work closely with me and my research team at the Ohio State U= niversity to gain experience in cochlear implant research and develop a str= ong understanding of the human experimental data that will inform the model= ing work. This will include studies of neural responses to electrical stimu= lation in adult and pediatric cochlear implant users, together with relevan= t electrophysiological, psychophysical, and speech perception measures. A major focus of the position will be the development and validation of a n= ew humanized computational model of cochlear nerve responses to electrical = stimulation, under the mentorship of Dr. Ian Bruce at the McMaster Universi= ty. As the fellow becomes familiar with the experimental approaches and dat= asets, the work will increasingly focus on computational modeling and simul= ation while remaining closely integrated with the human experimental resear= ch in my laboratory. Experimental findings will inform model development, w= hile predictions generated by the model can, in turn, motivate new experime= ntal questions. A particularly exciting aspect of this opportunity is access to our extensi= ve experimental datasets collected directly from diverse populations of ped= iatric and adult cochlear implant users. These datasets provide a valuable = opportunity to inform, refine, and validate computational models of the ele= ctrically stimulated human cochlear nerve. Our longer-term goal is to devel= op a humanized model that better captures individual differences in cochlea= r nerve function and advances our understanding of the relationships among = cochlear nerve health, neural encoding, and auditory outcomes in cochlear i= mplant users. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in co= mputational modeling, biomedical engineering, computational neuroscience, a= uditory science, or a related field. Prior experience with cochlear implant= s is helpful but not essential, as training in the experimental and clinica= l aspects of cochlear implant research will be provided.
