Re: Forming sequential objects

One of the important processes that gives rise to sequential objects
is segmentation. For a theoretical treatment of this in music,
see Lerdahl and Jackendoff's grouping preference rules. For an
experimental attempt at their demonstration, see I. Deliege (1987)
Music Perception, 4, 325-360. This study also pitted the different
factors that Lerdahl & Jackendoff dreamt up against one another,
though it didn't control for the relative amount of discontinuity
introduced by each one in a systematic way. There's a lot to be
done from these two sources either within or without a musical
orientation.
