One area that has seen a lot of work, because of its commercial
significance, is detecting the pitch of a musical tone from the
initial transient -- this is useful for boxes that let acoustic
instruments control music synthesizers in real time. I don't
have a full bibliography handy, but these two links give a
flavor for the type of work in the field:
