I'm no expert, but as far as I know, the MMN is a difference between a
cortical evoked potential waveform in response to stimuli that differ along
some sensory continuum. The subject is usually not attending to the stimuli,
which are often a stream of repetitive "standard" stimuli, interspersed with
an infrequent, "deviant" stimulus.
