Introduction

The University of Leeds is one of the UK's leading academic institutions and looks to compete amongst the world's premier higher education providers. The University is simultaneously committed to international levels of excellence in research and learning and teaching. Over the last ten years, the University has confirmed its place as a world-class institution, and has experienced a period of immense growth and successful change. In September 2004, Professor Michael Arthur succeeded Professor Sir Alan Wilson as Vice-Chancellor and has set in motion one of the largest investment programmes of any leading UK institution. The Faculty of Medicine and Health is one of nine Faculties of the University, the others being Arts; Biological Sciences; Business, Education, Social Sciences and Law; Engineering; Environment; Mathematics and Physical Sciences and Performance, Visual Arts and Communications.

The strategy and values of the Faculty are set out in its mission statement, which states that, "The Faculty of Medicine and Health is committed to academic excellence, world class teaching and research, which supports the needs of the local health community and creates an environment for students and staff to achieve their true potential".

The University has a clear strategy to become one of the top 50 universities in the world. The Faculty is actively engaged with the development and implementation of this strategy.

The School of Healthcare

The School of Healthcare is a large multidisciplinary School within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The School has approximately 3,000 students and an annual turnover of almost £18M. There are approximately 200 academic staff, with a further 80 support staff, contributing to education, research, practice and knowledge transfer. The activity of the school involves pre-registration programmes in nursing, midwifery, audiology, clinical physiology, midwifery, radiography and social work. It includes a large portfolio of Continuing Professional Development courses and postgraduate provision for the above disciplines as well counselling and pharmacy. A new head of school, Professor Dawn Freshwater, was appointed in September 2007.

Research

The School has a rapidly developing research portfolio and incorporates researchers from a range of backgrounds, including practitioners, Healthcare Scientists, Clinical Scientists, Nurses, Midwives Pharmacistsand social scientists.

Audiology research was established in the School in 2004 and as a relatively young team of researchers at the University of Leeds the audiology & clinical physiology team come with a broad and multi-professional background in audiology, biology, physiology and psychology. A collaborative attitude is strongly encouraged within the team and this has lead to a natural generation of ideas for research that link basic science and clinical practice and foster partnerships within and outside of the University, nationally and internationally. Our current research focuses upon two main areas. The first involves studying the physiological mechanisms important for audio-vestibular function that will inform development of clinical tests of hearing and balance. The second involves studying interactions between auditory, vestibular and visual inputs and the environment in the contexts of road safety, hearing impairment, healthy ageing and speech development. The development of further areas of research in hearing and balance is encouraged.
