<>ARMY AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH CENTER

Computational Systems Modeler / Computer Programmer

The Computational Systems Modeler will be an integral part of a team effort supporting a research program aimed at characterizing and modeling suprathreshold distortions in auditory processing by persons with impaired hearing. These projects will be conducted by the Research Section of the Army Audiology and Speech Center at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. The overall project will be under the supervision of the Director of Research, Army Audiology and Speech Center.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Computational modeling of auditory speech processing from periphery to cortex using extant models of speech perception and data from neurophysiology and psychoacoustics.
  2. Integrate data from new psychoacoustic experiments on hearing-impaired patients’ perception of speech and non-speech sounds into the models to represent the neural and perceptual effects of hearing loss on speech processing.
  3. Integrate data from facial kinematics into the computational auditory processing models to characterize the effects of speechreading on speech processing.
  4. Develop metrics characterizing speech processing differences between normal and impaired speech perception, and among different hearing-impaired individuals.

Experience Required:

Several years of experience in Hearing Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field with an emphasis on auditory processing of speech and other sounds is required. Background knowledge in the following areas is preferred:  neural coding in normal and impaired auditory systems, neural mechanisms for speech processing, models of auditory signal processing and perception, psychoacoustics, computer programming/computational modeling.

Education Required:

Ph.D. in Hearing Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field of acoustics is required. Candidates with post-doctoral experience are preferred.
