AW: the seven wonders of hearing

I seem to remember that A. R. Cody's 1992 paper
"Acoustic lesions ..." (Hear Res 62: 166-172),
demonstrating that the active-OHC region was only 0.5 mm
long (basal slope of active peak; guinea pigs) created
considerable astonishment.

[...] All such models that I'm aware of show a significant
active effect only within about a half-octave range,
consistent with experimental data. No specific restriction
is needed to get this behavior.
