Hmmm, what's this, a controvertial statement? ;-)
It's not too far fetched to suppose that perceptual processes at the lowest levels are actively modulated by attentional absorption such as in your example. However, this modulation is probably not as severe as that experienced at the cognitive level; I get your point.
Like a microphone, the ear reacts to the incoming acoustic stimuli without discrimination.
